If you thought you knew everything there is to know about Simon Cowell, think again.
Recently, during a performance on the 2018 season of “America’s Got Talent,” we were reintroduced to a performer who won Simon’s heart over during the auditions. In fact, Simon was so taken by singer Michael Ketterer’s story, background, and voice that he awarded him the coveted golden buzzer, sending him straight to the semi-finals.
Now, it was once again Michael’s chance to shine on stage, and he definitely did not disappoint. Michael gave a memorable vocal performance that left the judges stunned and choking back tears.
You may recall that Michael is not your typical contestant on the popular talent show. The Knoxville, Tennessee performer is not only a pediatric mental health nurse by trade, but he and his wife have also adopted six children together. Many of their kids have special needs and disabilities.
Having the chance to change his and his family’s life with a music contract would mean more to Michael than to just about any other contestant. Simply knowing what he’s got riding on the show made Simon emotional, but the vulnerable, tender way he sings is what really tipped this performance over the edge.
When Michael finished singing, all four judges gave him a standing ovation, and host Tyra Banks was eager to speak to Simon, who was visibly choked up.
The notoriously critical judge asked her to move on to another one, but she wasn’t about to let Simon off the hook that easily! As he held back tears, Simon said Michael’s story hit him hard “as a dad.”
“I can’t imagine what you’ve done and the fact that you’re on this show, and you really need this, and you’re a really, really special guy, and I don’t know. There’s something about you,” Simon explained.
“That’s what a lot of people don’t know about Mr. Cowell, is that he’s a big soft papa,” Tyra replied.
It wasn’t just Simon who was personally moved by Michael’s story and voice, though. Mel B also had a hard time keeping it together!
“Yоu’re just an incredible рersоn, an incredible human being. Tо dо what yоu’ve dоne, taking оn bоard, adорting all these kids and giving them life, and then yоur vоice sings such truth and hоnesty… I cried at the first wоrd,” Mel tоld Michael.
“We just need mоre men like yоu!” Heidi exclaimed.
Michael’s fate оn the shоw is nоw dоwn tо the audience as they vоte fоr their favоrite рerfоrmers, althоugh it seems in many ways that Michael has already wоn.
