Rhode Island Judge Caprio explains Italian hand gesture (If I catch you)

ʀʜᴏᴅᴇ ɪsʟᴀɴᴅ Judge Caprio ᴇxᴘʟᴀɪɴs Italian hand gesture (ɪғ ɪ ᴄᴀᴛᴄʜ ʏᴏᴜ)

Hand ɢᴇsᴛᴜʀᴇs ᴀʀᴇ ᴀ ᴘᴏᴡᴇʀғᴜʟ ᴛᴏᴏʟ that has been a large part of ɪᴛᴀʟɪᴀɴ culture.

Around 250sᴘᴇᴄɪғɪᴄ ʜᴀɴᴅ ɢᴇsᴛᴜʀᴇs ʜᴀᴠᴇ ʙᴇᴇɴ ɪᴅᴇɴᴛɪғɪᴇᴅ, with the belief that they originated from a long history of Italy ʙᴇɪɴɢ ɪɴᴠᴀᴅᴇᴅ ʙʏ ᴍᴀɴʏ ᴏᴛʜᴇʀ ᴄᴏᴜɴᴛʀɪᴇs.

Given that there was no common language, people had to come up with other ways of communicating, forming the ʙᴀsɪs ᴏғ ᴍᴏᴅᴇʀɴ-ᴅᴀʏ ʜᴀɴᴅ ɢᴇsᴛᴜʀᴇs.

Judge Caprio

Judge Frank Caprio, ᴇxᴘʟᴀɪɴɪɴɢ ᴛʜᴇ (“ɪғ ɪ ᴄᴀᴛᴄʜ ʏᴏᴜ”) ɪᴛᴀʟɪᴀɴ ʜᴀɴᴅ ɢᴇsᴛᴜʀᴇ

Today, when it comes to hand gestures, we ɪᴛᴀʟɪᴀɴs sɪᴍᴘʟʏ ʀᴜʟᴇ.

The children of Italian parents also know a wooden spoon can do a lot more than just stir a boiling pot of ᴛᴏᴍᴀᴛᴏ sᴀᴜᴄᴇ.

The infamous “wooden spoon” is used by many Italian moms to ᴘᴜɴɪsʜ ᴛʜᴇɪʀ ᴋɪᴅs. My mother was always there for us, but she ᴡᴀs ᴛʜᴇ ᴄᴏɴsᴜᴍᴍᴀᴛᴇ ᴅɪsᴄɪᴘʟɪɴᴀʀɪᴀɴ. She ᴡᴏᴜʟᴅ ʜɪᴛ ғɪʀsᴛ and ask questions later.

But I was often forewarned about a ᴘʀᴏsᴘᴇᴄᴛɪᴠᴇ ᴡʜᴀᴄᴋ by a simple hand gesture. My mom ᴡᴏᴜʟᴅ ʙᴀʟʟ ᴜᴘ ʜᴇʀ ғɪsᴛ ᴀɴᴅ ʙɪᴛᴇ ᴛʜᴇ ᴋɴᴜᴄᴋʟᴇ ᴀɴᴅ ᴍᴀᴋᴇ ᴀ ᴄʜᴏᴘᴘɪɴɢ ɢᴇsᴛᴜʀᴇ ɪɴ ᴛʜᴇ ᴀɪʀ.

This might look as though it ɪɴᴅɪᴄᴀᴛᴇs ʜᴜɴɢᴇʀ, but in fact, sends a message of ɪᴍᴘᴇɴᴅɪɴɢ ᴘᴜɴɪsʜᴍᴇɴᴛ.

It stands for: “If I catch you you’re in ᴅᴇᴇᴘ ᴛʀᴏᴜʙʟᴇ, ɪ’ʟʟ ʜᴜʀᴛ ʏᴏᴜ.”

Judge Frank Caprio, who presides over the ᴍᴜɴɪᴄɪᴘᴀʟ ᴄᴏᴜʀᴛ in Providence, Rhode Island, explains the Si t’ancagliu (“ɪғ ɪ ᴄᴀᴛᴄʜ ʏᴏᴜ”) Italian hand gesture in more detail.
