Her 8-Year-Old Son Told Police She Was Drinking—What Officers Found Next Was Even Worse

A routine evening at a Sarasota shopping center turned into a frightening scene when a passerby saw three children crying and believed they might be in danger. What police discovered moments later was not an abduction, but something that may have been even more difficult for the children to understand: their own mother appeared to be too impaired to safely care for them.

The incident began around 6:47 p.m. on November 1, 2025, when Sarasota police received a report about three young children who were reportedly screaming and trying to avoid being put into a vehicle. A concerned woman who had just arrived at the store initially feared she was witnessing an abduction.

When she approached the children, however, an eight-year-old boy told her something that immediately changed the nature of the emergency.

His mother, he said, had been drinking. His infant brother was still in the vehicle.

When officers arrived, they separated the children from their mother and began trying to determine what had happened. While one officer spoke with the woman, another sat down with the children, carefully asking questions without escalating their fear.

The boy eventually described what he had witnessed.

He told the officer that his mother had stopped at a gas station, gone inside and returned with what appeared to be an alcoholic drink. According to his account, she opened it, drank it quickly and threw the container into a trash can. He said that afterward, her speech and behavior changed, which made him believe she was no longer capable of driving safely.

For a child that young, recognizing that a parent is impaired and then trying to keep younger siblings safe is an unsettling responsibility to carry. The boy also told officers that his mother had previously been jailed for drinking and driving and had only recently regained her driver’s license.

Meanwhile, officers conducted field sobriety exercises with the 28-year-old mother. They explained each test and repeatedly made sure she was physically able to participate safely. The officer eventually told her that she was going to be arrested, while deliberately trying to keep the handcuffing out of the children’s view so they would not be unnecessarily traumatized.

The civilian who called police later gave investigators an account that closely echoed what the child had described. She said the children had been crying hysterically while their mother appeared unable to communicate normally. She also recalled the boy refusing to get back into the vehicle and repeatedly saying that his mother had been drinking and using drugs.

That testimony became particularly important from a legal standpoint because the case was no longer simply about suspected impairment. Officers were investigating whether the mother had knowingly placed her children in danger.

She was arrested on suspicion of DUI and child endangerment, with the presence of three children under 18 potentially increasing the consequences associated with the DUI allegation. Officers also involved child-protection authorities to determine whether the children could safely be released to their grandmother.

Then the investigation took another turn.

During a search, officers discovered a crystalline substance that the mother reportedly claimed was ketamine. She also allegedly described herself as a user rather than someone who sold drugs. Police subsequently tested the substance, according to the source material, and determined what it actually was. The precise substance is not clearly identified in the available transcript, so it would be inappropriate to assume a specific drug beyond what the investigation established.

The mother also refused a breath test after being taken into custody. Under Florida law, a DUI investigation can involve separate consequences for refusing an authorized chemical test, although the exact legal impact depends on the circumstances and applicable statutes. Her refusal therefore became another issue investigators documented rather than something that simply ended the DUI investigation.

Ultimately, according to the source, she faced charges including felony child neglect, DUI, possession of a controlled substance, possession or use of narcotic equipment, and refusal to submit to DUI testing. Her total cash bond was set at $5,500, with a jury trial hearing scheduled for September 2026.

Perhaps the most painful moment came after the arrest, when the children’s grandmother arrived and officers began discussing how the infant would be cared for. One officer told the mother that the baby needed to be fed and that, for the moment, police would make sure he was taken care of.

The children had not caused the crisis. They had simply found themselves depending on strangers to keep them safe from a situation they were too young to manage themselves.

And in the middle of it all was an eight-year-old who understood something that his mother, according to police, had failed to recognize that evening: sometimes protecting your family means admitting that the person behind the wheel should never have been driving in the first place.
