When rescuers received a call about a dog dying beside the road, they immediately rushed to help. But nothing could have prepared them for the heartbreaking sight waiting at the scene.
A young shepherd dog lay motionless in the mud, his fragile body covered in urine and feces. He was so desperately thin that nearly every bone could be seen beneath his skin. His muscles had wasted away, leaving him with barely enough strength to lift his head. Even keeping his eyes open seemed to require an enormous effort.
He was severely dehydrated, dangerously cold, and suffering from critical anemia. His gums had turned pale, and his body temperature had dropped below 32 degrees Celsius. At that point, he was not simply weak or hungry. His life was in immediate danger.
Yet what made the situation even more heartbreaking was how long he had been left waiting.
Hours Passed Before Help Finally Arrived
The dog had been discovered at around 10 a.m. Some kind strangers stayed beside him, unwilling to leave him alone in such a terrible condition. They desperately searched for someone who could take responsibility for his rescue, but the hours passed without anyone arriving to help.
As the afternoon wore on, his condition remained critical. He could barely move, and there was little indication that his exhausted body could endure much longer.

The people who had found him refused to give up. They continued searching until they finally located the contact information of a rescue team.
At approximately 4 p.m., the rescuers received the call. They immediately set out, knowing that every minute could matter.
When they arrived, the dog was barely responsive. Carefully, they lifted his fragile body and placed him inside their vehicle. He could not stand on his own paws, and his eyes were only partly open.
The rescuers named him Kostek.
It was difficult to imagine how much suffering he had endured before that moment. But there was no time to dwell on the past. Kostek needed emergency veterinary care, and he needed it immediately.
A Fight for Survival at the Rescue Center
Once Kostek arrived at the rescue center, veterinarians began working to stabilize him. His body temperature was below 32°C, making warming him safely one of the immediate priorities. He also needed fluids, essential medications, and careful monitoring to address the effects of severe dehydration, anemia, and prolonged starvation.

Medical examinations revealed just how serious his condition was. His body had been deprived of the nutrition and care it needed for so long that even basic physical functions had become a struggle.
The veterinary team monitored him continuously. Every hour was important, and his recovery could not be rushed. A dog who has experienced such extreme starvation needs carefully managed nutritional support, because suddenly feeding too much can create additional medical risks.
For the first several days, Kostek remained in a fragile condition. The people caring for him could only take things one step at a time, watching closely for signs that his body was beginning to respond to treatment.
Then, slowly, the first signs of hope appeared.

Kostek began accepting tiny portions of food. It was a small development, but after everything he had endured, seeing him eat was an encouraging milestone. His strength gradually improved, and the dog who had once been unable to lift his head began showing more awareness of the world around him.
From His First Steps to a New Life
Recovery came gradually, through weeks of medical care, proper nutrition, and patient attention. Kostek’s body needed time to rebuild the strength it had lost, and his caregivers celebrated every improvement.
A few weeks later, he finally managed to stand.
At first, his movements were uncertain. His legs had been weakened by prolonged malnutrition, and even taking a few steps required considerable effort. But he kept trying. Before long, he was walking more confidently, and each day brought another sign that the worst might finally be behind him.

His weight and physical condition improved, while his personality began to emerge. The helpless dog found in the mud was slowly becoming a lively young shepherd again.
Months later, the transformation was remarkable. Kostek was running around the rescue center, moving with an energy that seemed impossible to imagine when he first arrived. His body had regained strength, and he was finally able to enjoy the ordinary pleasures that every dog deserves.
But his journey still had one more beautiful chapter.
After months of recovery, Kostek found a loving forever family. The dog who had once been left fighting for his life beside a road was now surrounded by warmth, attention, and the security of a permanent home.

His story is a powerful reminder that severe neglect can leave animals dangerously close to death, but timely veterinary treatment and sustained care can give them another chance. It also shows how important it is for people who discover an animal in distress to keep seeking help rather than assuming nothing can be done.
Kostek could not ask for help in words. He could barely lift his head when someone finally stopped for him. But the strangers who stayed, the rescuers who answered the call, and the veterinary team who cared for him gave him something he desperately needed: time, treatment, and a reason to keep going.
Today, the dog who once had almost no strength left is living the happy life he should have known all along.
