The little elephant knew he had been caught.
In a sugarcane field near Chiang Mai, Thailand, local farmers noticed a baby elephant enjoying a snack that clearly wasn’t his. When people approached with flashlights, the calf suddenly stopped eating and made a hilariously innocent decision: he would hide.
There was only one problem.
His chosen hiding place was a ridiculously thin wooden pole.
The tiny elephant pressed himself behind it and stood as still as possible, apparently convinced that if he couldn’t see the approaching humans, they couldn’t see him either. His enormous body remained almost completely exposed on both sides of the pole, turning what might have been a tense encounter into an irresistibly funny wildlife moment.

Photographs of the calf quickly spread online, with people laughing at his innocent attempt to disappear after being caught enjoying the sweet sugarcane. But beneath the adorable scene is a reminder of the complicated relationship between elephants and people in Thailand.
As a wildlife specialist, I often explain that wild elephants are highly intelligent, curious animals with excellent memories and remarkably adaptable behavior. When their natural habitat overlaps with farmland, however, conflict can occur because crops such as sugarcane provide an easy and nutritious food source.
For this little calf, the incident ended as a charming reminder of just how much personality elephants can have.
He wasn’t dangerous. He wasn’t trying to cause trouble.
He simply found something delicious, realized humans were coming, and decided that the world’s thinnest hiding place was his best option.
Perhaps the funniest part is imagining what was going through his mind: If I stay perfectly still, maybe nobody will notice me.
Unfortunately for him, the camera noticed everything.
