In a crowded market, where people hurried between stalls and vendors focused on their daily work, a severely injured dog struggled to survive. Too weak to walk normally, painfully thin, and desperate for food, he crawled along the ground searching for something to eat. Some people shooed him away, unwilling to let him remain near their shops, while his worsening injuries made it increasingly difficult for him to find shelter or help.
But one woman saw what others had overlooked. Instead of turning away, she offered him a little food and contacted rescuers. That simple act would change the course of the dog’s life, giving him a chance to receive medical treatment and discover that not every human would abandon him.
A Familiar Face in an Unfamiliar World
The dog, later called Valentia, had reportedly suffered an injury that may have been caused by a vehicle. Over time, the damage to his knee became increasingly severe, leaving him struggling to move around and search for food. Without proper treatment, his condition deteriorated, and the injured area developed an unpleasant odor that caused some people to drive him away rather than offer assistance.
For an already vulnerable animal, this created a cruel cycle. His injury made it harder to find food, while hunger and weakness left him with even fewer resources to cope with the pain. As the days passed, surviving on the streets became an exhausting challenge.
When rescuers from Dame Pata learned about Valentia through a post shared in their VK community, they were deeply concerned by what they saw. They immediately went to the market to search for him, determined to bring him somewhere he could receive proper care.

Their search eventually led them to a place where Valentia had hidden beneath a parked car. Despite the painful experiences he appeared to have endured, the dog approached his rescuers with remarkable friendliness. Rather than retreating in fear, he seemed eager to interact with the people who had come looking for him.
His gentle behavior raised the possibility that he had once been someone’s pet. Although his past could not be confirmed from his behavior alone, his willingness to approach people was a striking contrast to the rejection he had reportedly experienced on the streets.
An Emergency Visit to the Veterinarian
When the rescuers finally brought Valentia into their vehicle, they were struck by how small and underweight he looked. He was reportedly around 15 kilograms below a healthy weight, leaving his body painfully depleted. Even so, he continued to behave gently despite his hunger and discomfort.

The team took him to a veterinary clinic at approximately 8 p.m. His injured knee was a major concern, and it was not yet clear whether he would regain the ability to walk normally. The rescuers also faced worries about his other leg, making a thorough assessment and careful treatment essential.
From an animal-care perspective, a dog with a serious limb injury needs more than temporary relief from pain. Veterinarians must evaluate the damaged structures, assess circulation and infection risks, and determine how much mobility can realistically be restored. Severe malnutrition can further complicate recovery because the body needs adequate nutrition to repair tissue and rebuild muscle.
Valentia’s future remained uncertain, but at least he was no longer struggling alone in a crowded market.
His Appetite Returned Before His Strength
After his initial treatment, Valentia was placed in a special room where his condition could be monitored around the clock. One encouraging sign quickly emerged: he still had a healthy interest in food.
The following morning, he ate enthusiastically for an extended period, from around 8 a.m. until 10 a.m., according to his rescuers. For a dog who had spent so much time searching desperately for scraps, having regular meals available was an important step toward recovery.

After eating, Valentia appeared more comfortable and began interacting and playing with his caregivers. The change offered a welcome moment of relief to the people who had worried about his condition the night before.
The next day, he was still wearing a bandage, but he was moving around his room. His progress was encouraging, although his injuries and poor physical condition meant that he would need continued veterinary attention and rehabilitation.
Then his caregivers introduced him to a special new piece of equipment: a wheelchair designed to help him move more easily.
At first, using it required adjustment, as it would for any dog learning to move with unfamiliar support. After several days, however, Valentia began getting used to the wheelchair and navigating his surroundings with greater ease. It offered him a new opportunity to explore without relying entirely on his injured legs.

A Second Chance for a Dog Who Never Stopped Trusting
Valentia’s recovery was far from complete, and there was still no guarantee of how much mobility he would eventually regain. Nevertheless, the frightened, starving dog who once crawled beneath market stalls was now receiving medical care, regular meals, and attention from people committed to his well-being.
His story is a reminder that an injured stray should never be judged by the way he looks, smells, or moves. These can be signs of serious suffering, not reasons to reject an animal who desperately needs help. When a dog is unable to walk normally, contacting a rescue organization or veterinarian can make a life-changing difference.

Valentia now has a safer place to heal, and his rescuers hope he will eventually find a permanent home where he can continue to thrive.
He may have lost precious time to hunger, pain, and rejection, but his gentle spirit remained. The woman who stopped to feed him could not solve every problem he faced, yet she did something equally important: she refused to let his suffering go unnoticed.
For Valentia, that small act of kindness became the beginning of a new chapter—one in which he no longer has to crawl through a market begging for food, wondering who might turn him away next.
