Theunis Botha, a well-known South African professional hunter and father of five, died during a hunting expedition in Zimbabwe after an encounter with a herd of elephants ended in tragedy. The 51-year-old reportedly suffered fatal injuries when an elephant he had shot fell on him, turning what had begun as a hunting trip into a devastating loss for his family and colleagues.
News of Botha’s death was confirmed by Africa Big Hunt, a booking agency that described him as a fellow professional hunter, outfitter, and friend. In its announcement, the agency expressed deep sadness over his passing and extended its condolences to his wife, Carike, and their five children, who were left to face the sudden loss of a husband and father.

According to Simukai Nyasha, a spokesperson for Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority, Botha was hunting with clients on Good Luck Farm, near Hwange National Park, when the group reportedly encountered a breeding herd of elephants. Initial accounts indicated that the hunters had inadvertently entered the middle of the herd, placing themselves in a dangerous situation.
The encounter escalated when three female elephants reportedly charged at the group. Botha fired a shot, but a fourth elephant approached from the side, apparently catching him off guard. The animal lifted him with its trunk, and another hunter reportedly fired at the elephant. The wounded animal then collapsed onto Botha, crushing him beneath its weight.

Elephants are among the largest land mammals on Earth, and even experienced wildlife professionals can face extreme danger when close encounters develop unexpectedly. Female elephants in particular may respond forcefully when they perceive a threat to their herd or young. Their size, speed, and strength leave little room for error once a charge begins, making distance and careful awareness essential in any encounter with wild elephants.
Although the precise sequence of events was still based on initial reports, the incident highlighted the unpredictable nature of working around large wild animals. An elephant’s reaction cannot always be anticipated, and a situation that appears manageable can change within seconds. For the animals involved, such encounters may also be highly stressful, particularly when a herd feels threatened.

Botha had built a career organizing big-game hunting safaris in southern Africa. Information published on his professional website described his work with hounds during leopard and lion hunts, as well as his role in introducing traditional European-style driven Monteria hunts in South Africa. These hunts typically involve dogs driving wildlife toward hunters, who then attempt to shoot the animals.

His death prompted an outpouring of tributes from friends, former clients, and fellow hunters. Many remembered him as a familiar figure in the hunting community, sharing messages of grief and sympathy for the family he left behind. Their words reflected the personal relationships he had built over the years, as well as the shock of losing someone they knew and worked alongside.

For Carike and the couple’s five children, however, the loss was far more intimate than the tributes and professional remembrances could express. A family that had expected their loved one to return from another expedition was instead confronted with a sudden and irreversible tragedy.
Botha’s death also came only weeks after the reported death of fellow hunter Scott van Zyl, who was killed by crocodiles during a hunting trip in Zimbabwe. The two men were said to have been friends, adding another layer of sorrow to an already difficult period for those who knew them.

The circumstances surrounding Botha’s final expedition serve as a sobering reminder of the immense power of wild elephants and the risks involved in close encounters with them. Whatever the circumstances, the outcome was devastating: one man lost his life, and a wife, five children, and a wider circle of friends were left to mourn someone who would not be coming home.
